Marketing Basics: Define Your Target Audience using Customer Personas

Marketing Basics: Define Your Target Audience using Customer Personas

In my previous blog, part of my new Marketing Basics series, I outlined the importance of defining your target audience (who you want to buy your products or services). As part of that, a useful step you can take to help you in defining your audience is to create customer personas. They’re simple, focused profiles that help you understand and speak directly to your ideal clients.

What is a customer persona?

A customer persona is a fictional character that represents a specific type of customer you’d like to work with. It includes their goals, pain points, habits and motivations which helps your marketing to feel more personal. It is a bit like writing a short bio for your ideal client and can bring clarity to your messaging, branding and your service offerings.

How to create a simple customer persona

You don’t need anything fancy to get started. Just a few guiding questions:

  • What’s their name and job?
  • What do they need help with?
  • What frustrates them about your industry?
  • What results are they hoping for?
  • Where do they hang out online?

Example Persona:

Name: Sarah
Job: Florist running her own boutique studio
Struggles: Overwhelmed by social media and unsure how to attract more clients
Goals: Wants to book higher-end weddings and feel more confident in her marketing
Values: Visual storytelling, warm branding, trust-building content

When you write a blog, create an Instagram post, or plan a new service – picture Sarah. You speak directly to her challenges, in her language.

Why personas matter

When you tailor your voice and visuals to just a few well-defined personas, the right people feel seen, and they’re more likely to engage, inquire and invest in your product or service.

The takeaway:

Clarity beats complexity. Define 1 to 3 customer personas and use them to guide every marketing move you make. A good connection with your audience starts with knowing who you’re really here to serve.
